Appalachian Trail Information
September 6th, 2008The Appalachian Trail is a hiking trail that stretches from Springer Mountain, Georgia, all the way to Mt. Khatadin in Maine. The 2,175-mile long footpath winds its way through 14 states in the eastern United States. The trail was first conceived in 1921, and completed in 1937. The Appalachian Trail traverses many scenic, wild, wooded, pastoral, and other culturally significant lands of the Appalachian Mountains.
Every year, an estimated 4 million people use the Appalachian Trail. With our paving efforts underway, we are hoping to increase this number 10 fold over the next several years, by granting easier access to what is already a remarkable footpath through beautiful forests.
Efforts to pave the entire Appalachian Trail have been in talks for over 15 years. Until now, funding roadblocks and resistance from local and state authorities have prevented any serious discussions. Until early 2006, individual contributors were few and far between, until business tycoon and philanthropist Rod Dickman graciously provided the money, and a voice within the ‘red-tape’ to help jump-start our initiative.
Since then, thousands of individuals and businesses have pledged their support, and paving is underway and ahead of schedule! Here at PTAT, we would like to extend our sincerest thank you’s to all that have helped monetarily.
If you would like to help or voice your opinion, do not hesitate to contact us.
Warmest regards,
The Pave the Appalachian Trail Team
