Frequently Asked Questions
September 6th, 2008Q. Why have you decided to pave the Appalachian Trail?
A. Paving the Appalachian Trail will allow more people easier access to a beloved national treasure. Once completed, the newly-paved Appalachian Trail will mark the longest, continuous multi-use trail in the world. Perfect for hikers, bikers, and a diverse variety of families to experience the heart of Appalachia.
Q. Will the additional trail paving construction harm the environment?
A. Here at PTAT, we believe the environment is paramount. That’s why we launched a nineteen hundred and eighty dollar initiative to completely recycle the trees that are inconvenienced during our minimal-impact, Green2º® construction methods.
Q. Can I drive the entire Appalachian Trail?
A. With special permits available at our information centers or kiosks, only motorized scooters and electric vehicles (such as golf carts) are permitted on the trail. Bicyclists will also be required a $2 day-use access permit, and a bicycle which is up to code. Please click here for more information on our permit costs.
Because of concerns with established local businesses, gas will not be available directly on the trail. There exists a multitude of gas stations located very close to the trail, and in most cases, only require a very small commute for refueling.
Q. Won’t the additional kiosks and outdoor patios displace wildlife?
A. No! As a matter of fact, the minimal, low-impact improvements we are making to the trail will encourage newer, more diverse species to co-exist with native flora and fauna, to help spur newer, more diverse ecosystems that better blend in with today’s ever-increasingly diverse world.
Q. What will be available at the kiosks located along the trail?
A. All kiosks will be self-contained, solar-powered structures complete with refreshments and a simple ‘pub style’ menu. Certain kiosks (depending on local jurisdictions) will serve alcohol, and have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Please check with the appropriate kiosk in advance for complete scheduling.
Q. I have heard rumors regarding the trail… that once completed, will be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. If so, will I be able to attend the official ceremony?
A. You heard correctly! We have contacted the powers-that-be at the Guinness Book of World Records. During our final construction of the Thirsty Thruhikers Bed & Breakfast Nook at the summit of Mt. Khatadin, we will hold a FREE event, where Guinness Book staff, and various local and national media outlets will attend.
Raffle tickets will be available for $10, and will allow you the chance to win prizes such as all you can eat and drink buffet specials, which will be catered by Kathy’s Catering of Maine.
